program timeline

I learned a lot in the LAC camp! I was fascinated by the diversity of the courses: Finance, psychology, linguistics, English, literature, drama, art and so on. I want  to say thank you to those teaching assistants and lecturers. Thanks for bringing such-such wonderful lessons! This activity does not only let us know in advance of the courses in the university but also enable me to acquire the precious friendship.

As the adolescents, we are now at the age which fulls of confusion, curiosity, and rebelliousness. In this stage, we lack strong self-awareness, clear thinking pattern and excellent verbal ability verbal.  Without a clear motivation to pursue our dreams, we could only spend our efforts on frivolous things.

However, this activity enlightened me, helping me make sure the direction of my life. This activity gave me a chance to escape from the boring classes, strict doctrine, and several rules. In this activity, we are eager to participate in the practical and interesting learning process. From this event, I realized that this is the life I want to lead: follow my heart and explore the bigger world.

Rather than acting the traditional roles of the “teachers and students,” the volunteers act more like intimate friends to us.  There is no obstacle and misunderstanding between us.  In the class, they will not blame us if we answer the questions wrong, on the contrary, they encourage us to come up with many peculiar ideas to arouse our enthusiasm. The atmosphere of the class is not like a transitional and formal class. It’s more like a casual chat between friends!
The volunteers help me a lot! Jesse and Daniel traveled a long way to China to help us with the English.  They taught me the authentic expressions of English and the methods to learn English. They told me that practice is the most important way of learning oral English. Also, they encouraged me not be timid and ashamed, trying to speak confidently and loudly. They gave me a lot of support.
The volunteers imparted us various types of knowledge and spectacular career planning in their classes.  They are also willing to share their experience and skills with us. In the class of leadership, I explored the orientation of my personality. In the career planning meeting, I made clear that I wanted to pursue my dream of being a scientist even though I knew its might sounds ridiculous and untouchable.  Instead of persuading me to give up this idea, he analyzes the feasibility, pointed out the approach and gave me many suggestions, making me more explicit about my plan.

As the people who in charges of this summer camp, I need to communicate with the schools and volunteer, take charge of the equipment and facilities, and solve all the potential problem like arrange teaching activity area, negotiate with the school the time to take a bath and take charge of the use of the computers.

In the first few days,  the heavy workload and harsh working environment make me overwhelmed. With the title of the “ charger,” I can not communicate with the students in my self-identity. The mood started to change when I received the gift—a bunch of roses sent by my student. Finally, I can release myself and felt like all the efforts I devoted deserve.  These students supported me and gave me encouragement. Staying with the students is the biggest harvest I had this experience.

In the summer of 2016, Love Across the Coast organized our summer  camp at puyang first middle School (濮阳一中)in puyang County, a small city in Henan Province, China. During the two-week camp, 15 volunteer teachers and mentors worked closely with 60 students in seminars and collaborative group activities. In this event, we divided the students into five classes. Each class had different courses. The students can choose to participate in the class according to their own preference.
